* We donate 20% of proceeds from sales of this box to Healing Kashmir, an organization dedicated to helping the people of Kashmir to heal the mental trauma associated with long-term violent conflict.
A hand painted keepsake box full of spring cheer from the region of Kashmir. This useful and decorative box is handmade by the artisans of MESH. MESH is an organization that provides handicapped artisans opportunities for selling their crafts, helping them gain self-sufficiency. This cheery box is handcrafted out of papier-mâché, a craft that has been part of Kashmiri culture since the 15th century. The process of shaping the box is called sakhtazi, and starts with recycled paper pulp that is soaked, molded, then dried. The surface is then coated with glue, burnished smooth, and layered with tissue paper. Then the box is entirely hand painted, a process called naqashi. Finally, lacquer is applied to seal the box, giving it durability. Full of hand-painted charm, this keepsake box makes a great gift on its own, or as a gift presentation box.
