Stunning iridescence. Artisan Jongman Park crafts these exquisite boxes in Seoul, South Korea. He works in the traditional Korean art of inlaying lacquerware with mother of pearl, a craft called Najeon-Chilgi. Mother of pearl, also known as nacre, is difficult to work with but is an integral part of Najeon-Chilgi. Lacquerware originated in China over two thousand years ago, but over time many Asian countries developed their own individual styles of craftsmanship. Korean artisans became masters of mother of pearl inlay, refining their complicated process and intricate designs. For this incredible box Jongman uses many traditional design aspects including a crane and deer motif which both represent longevity. This box makes a very special gift.
