Beautiful, rare thuya wood (pronounced twee-ya) comes from trees that are native to the Western Atlas Mountains of Morocco. Its unique figuring comes from using the burls of the underground roots of the tree, not the trunk. An effort to ensure the sustainability of these special trees has been put into effect, and artisans now craft small gift items from thuya wood instead of larger furniture. A careful re-planting strategy has also been implemented. Craftspeople in Morocco have been working with thuya wood for generations, and hope to continue handing down their craft: carving the wood, then rubbing oil and lemon juice onto the surface to bring out the exquisite natural burled grain. Each piece is unique in its pattern, and when opened, each box releases the smoky cedar-like scent of this rare wood.
This wooden box is an excellent gift idea for men as a cufflink box, or a special box for his desk.
