Vine and Birds Gourd
Artisans in the Andes Mountains of Peru handcraft these amazing gourd boxes by harvesting and peeling gourds (similar to pumpkins), then letting them dry in the sun. For this box the artisans first paint the gourd, then create the intricate design by etching. They then use a burning technique using the glowing embers of heated quinual wood. The artisans use the tip of the red-hot wood to create contrast on the gourd by blowing on the ember. Blowing harder creates a darker burn. It is an incredible process handed down from past generations, continued in small villages using the same techniques their ancestors used.
Gourd boxes are fun to collect, and they make very special gifts.
